Iowa Football coach Kirk Ferentz gets his contract extended through 2020 and is now the highest paid Big Ten coach. The new Big Ten divisions are announced, as well as schedules for 2011 and 2012, and Iowa's new cross-division protected rival is....Purdue?? A world-record hokey pokey attempt at FRYFest, Coach Kirk hates motor scooters, and a preview of Iowa's opening game vs. Eastern Illinois this Saturday. All that plus Field Hockey, Volleyball, and Iowa's Tom Brands is named a Big Ten icon. Go Hawks!!

Not only are the Hawks back to prove that 2009's 9-0 start wasn't a fluke, Hawkeyes.Org is back
with the regular fall columns you've come to expect. The Fearless Forecast, Hawkeye Harangue, other
contributed articles, and once again, my weekly "Hawk-itorial". It's all football all the time this
week as college games began tonight. Iowa State started slow, but eventually put away Northern Illinois.
Read on and I'll talk about whether Iowa can do the same with the Eastern school from the same state.

All kinds of news this Wednesday, and Football is most of it. A valuable OL player is leaving the Football team, police video of C Josh Koeppel's motorcycle accident, plenty of practice video and interviews with players, and Big Ten divisions will be announced tonight (yes, pre-announcement info was leaked, and can be found within). In other news, more about the passing of Men's Hoops legend Sharm Scheuerman, four walk-ons join the basketball team, and headlines from Field Hockey, Baseball, Volleyball, and Cross Country. On, Iowa!!

Every March, after the NCAA brackets are announced, you hear some staggering statistic about the workplace productivity that’s lost due to the nation’s loyal sports fans dutifully researching their picks.
I’m a bit surprised that there’s no equivalent statistic bandied about during the week or two before college football starts. I figure middle managers and shift supervisors across the land must have noticed a decline in productivity over the last week, at least based on my own behavior.

Kirk Ferentz held his first weekly press conference of the football season and highlighted the team's preparation for Eastern Illinois, who visits Kinnick Stadium this Saturday. Among the details, Stadium Drive will be renamed for Forest Evashevski as part of the weekend's FRYFest activities, at least 4 true freshmen will play on Saturday, starting center Josh Koeppel was hit by a truck, but appears to be okay, and Shaun Prater, among other minorly injured Hawkeyes may not play in the opener.
Men's Hoops holds their annual Chris Street golf outing, Former Iowa player and coach Sharm Scheuerman passes away, and the Carver renovation moves along. A highly ranked Women's Basketball recruit will be visiting town, plus Women's Soccer and Volleyball have early success, and news from Men's Cross Country. Go Hawks!!

HUGE day in headlines prior to the weekend, and as you might expect, football news tops the list. Brandon Wegher's situation is still in limbo, but two other Hawkeyes have definitely left the team since fall camp began. Iowa Football is worth $100 Million each year to Johnson County, the depth chart for next week's season opener is announced, and you can read previews and predictions for the Big Ten by ESPN, HawkCentral columnists, and the CR Gazette. There's also some football recruiting news, an interview with coach Ferentz, plus features on the return game, the kicking game, DT Karl Klug, RB Jewel Hampton, LB Tyler Nielsen, and DE Adrian Clayborn.
Believe it or not, there are other sports at the UI as well. The Men's Hoops schedule gets scrutinized by Iowa AD Gary Barta, a couple potential basketball recruits get scrutinized by coach McCaffery, Women's Hoops publishes their season schedule, plus news from Men's Tennis, Volleyball, Field Hockey, and Men's Golf. On Iowa!!

There is a lot of talk around the internet about how the Big Ten (+2) is going to divide up its divisions once Nebraska comes on board next year. Given that this is the perfect pre-season conversation and part of why I like expansion, I’ll weigh in by first offering a piece of conventional wisdom.

Get your wardrobe coordinated for Kinnick stadium...the blackout dates are announced for this fall. The BTN previews Iowa Fall Practice tonight at 7 PM, and it seems some of the Big Ten division work is done, and Iowa will not be in the same division as Wisconsin or Minnesota. A feature story on the LB position, TE, special teams, the non-conference schedule through 2014, injuries hobble Iowa's first opponent, and the Magic Bus may yet live again on tailgate Saturdays.
All that plus the Men's Basketball season schedule is made public, with at least one ESPN game during the Big Ten season, Women's Volleyball, and Men's Golf. Go Hawks!!

It’s 2010. My God, just say it and tell me it doesn’t sound weird: it’s the year two-thousand ten. Has it really been ten whole frigging years since Y2K?
For sure, I remember the fall of 2000 like it was yesterday. As the “social chair” of the UI Ski and Snowboard Club, I was responsible for ensuring the awesomeness of the weekly tailgate. It was a responsibility I took very seriously.
