Hawkeye HeadlinesIowa's Men's Basketball team split a pair of games this Thanksgiving weekend, dropping their first game of the season by nearly 20 points to West Virginia, but then rebounding with a close win over Kansas State to finish 3rd in the Las Vegas Invitational. The Iowa Women, playing in the Paradise Jam, reversed the order, losing a close one to S. Florida in OT, and then being blown out by #3 Cal. The Iowa Wrestlers went 4-0 at the Journeyman Duals, while Volleyball ends their regular season with a close loss to Michigan State. Football got a boost from the Oregon Ducks as they knocked OSU (Oregon State) out of the BCS, opening the door for the Big Ten's OSU, and the Hawks, to move up a bowl spot. The final BCS standings will be announced December 7th. GO Hawks!

  Fearless Picks - Week 14
Posted by Brent on Saturday, November 29 @ 11:33:41 CST (16 reads)

Fearless ForecastFirst things first, I screwed up and included a Friday game in the mix this week. CaliHawk pointed that out, so I'm giving everybody the point on that, as you the two of you who picked wrong could have updated your pick up until about half an hour ago.

With that out of the way, this week should be interesting - there are a lot more games where we weren't mostly in agreement, so there should be a little shakeup in the scores. I'm sure most of us are rooting for Oregon to win, and improve the Hawk's chances of a New Year's Day bowl berth, but most of picked Oregon State to prevail. Hopefully the "reverse psychology" works in Oregon too...

Hawkeye HeadlinesHoops is the word for Thanksgiving Weekend, as Iowa's Women already pull an upset over previously unbeaten Texas Tech in the Paradise Jam, while Iowa's Men look to meet their first real challenge Friday evening vs. West Virginia in the Las Vegas Invitational. Former Mountaineer Devan Bawinkel will get his first shot at his former teammates. Women's Volleyball fell just short in their upset bid vs. Minnesota, and Hawkeye Football fans will be Oregon Duck fans on Saturday. GO HAWKS!!

Hawkeye HeadlinesIowa's Men's Basketball team stayed perfect by whipping up on SEMO last night in Carver. Lickliter's bunch heads to Vegas at the end of the week to battle West Virginia in the next round of the Las Vegas Invitational. The two wins over Oakland and SEMO were the first 2 rounds. Iowa's Women's team arrived today in St. Thomas (Virgin Islands) for their holiday tourney. In football, there is plenty of bowl speculation and how Iowa's strong finish might improve their draw. Especially if the fans from the Metrodome restroom are planning on attending.

Iowa Wrestling heads to another duals match as head coach Tom Brands signs a contract extension. Plus, tickets for the Iowa-ISU meet are available. Other tickets offers can be found after the Turkey Day holiday, and check out headlines from Field Hockey and Baseball. Go Hawks!!

Fearless Forecast(Editor's note: Brent can program computers in more than 10 languages, but he evidently has trouble actually using them. He swears that he posted this story Tuesday morning, but we think it's just a clever ruse to keep anybody from catching him before the end of the season...)

Congratulations to Lunchbox on a perfect week! Lunch is the first Fearless Forecaster to have both a perfect week and to have also gone 0 for 11 at some point. Six of you did almost as well at 10-1, while HeneryHawk, T-Rex and myself brought up the rear with what would normally be respectable scores.

There are no Big Ten games this week, but we've got plenty of rivalry games to take their place. Some of these might look like easy picks, but remember, all bets are off in a grudge match (See ISU in '07, '05, '02, and '01) so this might be harder than you think. With only about 22 games left to pick, make 'em count!

Hawkeye HeadlinesPost-season awards are the main focus (for more than just football), as the all-Big Ten teams are announced, and no surprise, a few Hawkeyes were at the top of the list. Shonn Greene is named a Doak Walker finalist as well, with the winner named on ESPN December 11th. National honors for Field Hockey, and Women's Cross Country as well, plus Wrestling results from the all-star Dual in Ohio, Women's Basketball takes a Caribbean trip, and Volleyball ends their regular season. Men's Hoops entertains SE Missouri State tonight, then heads to Las Vegas to finish out the tournament, and ESPN.com highlights the Big Ten 2009 Men's Basketball recruiting classes. On Iowa!!

Hawkeye HeadlinesWow! What a weekend in Hawkeye Sports...the football team ended the regular season with a stupendous 55-0 crushing of Minnesota in Kinnick North, keeping Floyd of Rosedale where he belongs, the Men's Basketball team won a close game at home against the inspired defense of Oakland, and the Women's Basketball team won 2 games to take the Hawkeye Challenge title. In the wake of the football win, Iowa punter Ryan Donahue earned a Big Ten POW award, plenty of bowl scouts are interested in the Hawkeyes, Shonn Greene re-writes the record books and makes his case for a trip to New York.

Plenty of coverage of Men's and Women's Hoops, including a look ahead to the Iowa Men's Tuesday opponent: Southeast Missouri State. Wrestling recaps of the Kaufman-Brand Open, Women's Volleyball results, news about the Carver-Hawkeye Arena renovation, and some former football Hawkeyes find themselves riding the head college coaching carousel. GO HAWKS!!

  Fearless Picks - Week 13
Posted by Brent on Saturday, November 22 @ 15:09:17 CST (27 reads)

Fearless ForecastIt's the final week of Big Ten play! Thanksgiving and bowl announcements are just around the corner, and it's starting to feel a little bit like winter.

Today's games might show a little movement in the standings - we all agreed on five of the eleven games, but I was the only one to pick Cal Poly and Illinois, so when I'm wrong about those, the gap should close. It looks like the Washington/Washington State game may be the perfect "who cares?" game selection, as we were split right down the middle.

That said, the most important games today are probably the Iowa game and the Oklahoma/Texas Tech game - the outcome of those matchups could greatly effect where the Hawkeyes go to play a bowl game.

Hawkeye HeadlinesIowa prepares for the final game in the Dome tonight, amid speculation about Shonn Greene's future and word of the passing of a Hawkeye football great from the 1950's. With a win, Iowa improves their bowl standing, and retains Floyd of Rosedale. Hawkeye Men's Basketball wins their road opener at the Citadel, Wrestling takes care of business at the Iowa City Duals in the old Fieldhouse, and the Iowa Women's Basketball team heads into today's Hawkeye Challenge tourney hoping to put the blowout at Kansas behind them. Iowa Field Hockey falls in double OT in the Final Four, plus headlines from Volleyball, and Men's and Women's Cross Country. Go Hawks!!

Hawkeye Footballby Dr. Jay
Hawkeyes.org Editor

Iowa Football is in a similar position to last season prior to the final game. They need to go out on a winning note to cement the season as a successful step forward on the path to returning to the nation's elite. A win, and the reward is possibly a New Year's Day bowl game. A loss, and it's likely they'll play in an obscure bowl before Christmas Day, and the talk of whether Kirk Ferentz or Ken O'Keefe should be fired will dominate the winter and spring again.
