As Iowa counts down to FIU on Saturday, the press covers a few familiar stories, plus an interview with DJK, an injury update, and who on the team can sing the Fight Song. Carver-Hawkeye Arena's renovations are approved, and the Iowa Women's Basketball team will face a tough road away from it. Plus, legal news surrounding several former Hawkeyes, how the floods of 2008 have affected the athletics facilities, and headlines from Field Hockey, Women's Tennis, and Soccer.

Shorter and sweeter still, this week. Running Backs, Dueling QB's, Basketball Schedules, and my prediction for the FIU game.
Jewel in the Rough
The most pleasant surprise in Iowa's opening game vs. Maine, was watching true freshman Jewel Hampton scamper for 2 TD's leaving Black Bear tacklers grasping at air. After seeing 2nd-stringer Nate Guillory quit the team earlier in the week, I was concerned about the running back position should injuries or *gasp*, legal trouble, rear their ugly heads. Happily, Hampton showed he's ready for action, even as a first-year player.

Ed Hinkel will be on hand as honorary captain this weekend as Iowa takes on Florida International in Kinnick Stadium. Fans who watch from home have a few BTN channel numbers to sift through, while those who attend in person will be asked to contribute to disaster relief. Men's and Women's Basketball both get their full season schedules released, plus headlines from Volleyball, Women's Swimming, Field Hockey, and Men's Golf.

Well, credit goes to the Maine Black Bears for doing what they were supposed to do. Like so many of their FCS counterparts, they were brought into a big time stadium to play the role of unwitting victim in exchange for a nice paycheck, and they did so admirably during their 46-3 shellacking on Saturday.
Of course, there's only so much we can learn about the 2008 edition of the Iowa Football Hawkeyes from what was essentially an open, televised practice, but there are certainly a few storylines developing. Let's get to them.

As the dust settles after Iowa's football opener vs. Maine, Kirk Ferentz speaks at his Tuesday press conference and sets the table for next Saturday's game vs. the Golden Panthers of Florida International. Seems the QB spot will be shared again, Tony Moeaki won't play THIS week, and another in-state recruit commits to Iowa for 2009. Men's Basketball saw their schedule go public and the 16 games on the BTN will tipoff at 7:30 PM or earlier. All that plus Volleyball, Field Hockey, and Cross Country headlines. Go Hawks!!

Dr. Jay's Report Card: Maine Posted by Dr._Jay on Wednesday, September 03 @ 12:12:16 CDT (25 reads)

I'm going with a slightly different format for my Report Cards this season. It'll be a
slimmed-down low-stats version of what it used to be. I have to say I was impressed with
Iowa's performance vs. the Black Bears of Maine. For a season-opener, it wasn't quite
the disappointing performance like last year's game vs. NIU, but it also wasn't the dominant
trouncing that had you thinking about yardwork by the middle of the 3rd quarter. With 21
points in the final quarter, Iowa almost seemed to gain momentum as the game wore on.
Only 4 penalties, but 3 were biggies, including 2 facemasks. Here's how I grade the Hawks:

Feareless Forecast - Week 2 Posted by Brent on Tuesday, September 02 @ 21:57:05 CDT (21 reads)

We're one week into the competition, and as forecasted, there are only three games separating first place from 14th. If you forgot to get your picks in last week, a late start this week won't hurt you much, and there's a lot of football to be played before we're through.
This week features a full slate of Big Ten teams matching up with opponents selected to help them "tune up" before Big Ten play. Except for Minnesota. They accidentally picked a real team. As much as I like to root for the other Big Ten teams during out-of-conference play, I couldn't pick a better team to have this happen to. Unless it was a team coached by Ron Zook.
Go ahead and pick one of these games as your very own "who cares?" game - personally, I'm going with Indiana and the Murray State "MacLeods" this week.

A HUGE weekend in Hawkeye Sports, and not just because there was an extra holiday day's worth of headlines to post. Iowa Football sprinted out of the gate with a big win over Maine. Field Hockey split their weekend of games, but that included knocking off the #1 ranked team in the nation, Soccer had a mixed weekend before they take a trip out to sunny California, Volleyball also spent a little time in both the W and L columns, plus headlines from Men's and Women's Cross Country and Wrestling. Go Hawks!

Fearless Picks - Week 1 Posted by Brent on Saturday, August 30 @ 14:22:19 CDT (42 reads)

It's finally here! The 2008 season has finally begun. There probably won't be too many surprises in how everybody picked this first week. There weren't more than about four games that there was any doubt about how things are likely to turn out.
We've got a good start for the number of people participating this year - now we just all need to step it up with the "analysis" starting next week. Speaking of next week, if you missed making your picks this week, don't worry. Because of the way the rules work, if you start a week late, you're probably not going to be more than a couple games behind the leaders.

This is it...one day to go. The Maine game sold out, keeping the streak alive, Mediacom will televise it to those who don't have tickets, and Kirk speaks on how he thinks his Hawkeyes will do against his former employer. More on Lisa Bluder's contract extension, and good news for early-to-bed Men's Basketball fans as the BTN will tip off fewer Iowa games at 8 PM. Enjoy your Labor Day weekend, and Go Hawks!
